A quiet Atlanta neighborhood turned into a crime scene early this morning after police discovered three people shot inside a parked car, sparking an immediate FBI investigation into what authorities are calling a “targeted yet unexplained attack.”
According to the Atlanta Police Department, officers were dispatched around 6:20 a.m. after multiple residents reported hearing gunshots near Peachtree Avenue and Lenox Road, an area usually known for its calm, residential character.
When first responders arrived, they found a dark gray sedan idling by the curb, its windows shattered and doors locked. Inside were three victims — two men and one woman — all suffering from gunshot wounds. Two were pronounced dead at the scene, while the third was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, where their condition remains critical.
Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims pending family notification. However, sources close to the investigation told reporters that the car did not appear to be stolen, and there were no immediate signs of robbery, suggesting that the shooting may have been a planned or personal attack rather than random violence.
“Right now, we’re treating this as a highly unusual case,” said FBI field spokesperson Dana McCarthy during a morning briefing. “The lack of motive, the clean nature of the scene, and the precision of the shots all raise serious questions. We’re coordinating closely with local law enforcement to uncover what really happened.”
Neighbors described being jolted awake by a series of loud bangs before seeing flashing lights fill the street. One witness, who asked not to be named, said, “It was like five or six shots — really fast. Then it got quiet. When I looked out, I saw a car with smoke inside.”
Detectives spent hours combing through the area for shell casings and surveillance footage. Several nearby security cameras have already been collected for review. Forensics teams were seen dusting the car and inspecting nearby alleyways, looking for footprints or tire marks that could indicate a possible getaway vehicle.
FBI analysts are also reportedly reviewing cell tower data to identify any suspicious signals or phone activity in the area at the time of the shooting.
Though officials have not confirmed whether the victims knew each other, a police insider suggested that the group may have been meeting in the early morning hours before the attack occurred. Investigators are exploring whether the shooting could be connected to organized crime, a drug-related dispute, or even a case of mistaken identity.
The shocking discovery has reignited concerns about rising gun violence in Atlanta. City data shows that shootings in 2025 have already surpassed last year’s numbers, with several high-profile cases still unsolved.
As the investigation deepens, residents in the area are being urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity or dashcam footage to authorities.
“Someone out there knows what happened,” McCarthy added. “We will find them.”
The FBI has not ruled out federal involvement beyond Atlanta, saying that interstate links or digital evidence could expand the scope of the case.
For now, the street remains blocked off as investigators continue their work. Police expect to release more details once the victims are identified and autopsy results are completed.
